A Decade of Fishing Without Boundaries: A Personal Reflection

Ten years ago, when I first moved to Baxter, I was introduced to a truly special event: Fishing Has No Boundaries. (FHNB) Held at Camp Confidence, this annual event has become one of the highlights of my year.

It all started with a simple invitation from Pat Huhta, a member of the FHNB planning team, to sing the national anthem at their evening program. Little did I know that this would be the beginning of a decade-long journey filled with joy, gratitude, and a deep sense of purpose.

Fishing Has No Boundaries is a unique event that provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to experience the thrill of fishing on Sylvan or Gull Lake. The anglers, accompanied by experienced captains and first-mates, spend the day on the water, creating lasting memories.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of this event is the sheer joy and enthusiasm that radiates from the anglers. Their faces light up as they cast their lines, and their excitement is contagious. It’s a privilege to witness their determination and perseverance.

Each year, the event culminates in a grand celebration Saturday evening.  The fish are cleaned, and the anglers have the opportunity to take their catch home. There’s a delicious fish-fry supper, which is preceded by a color guard, the singing of the national anthem, and then a prayer…which has been my contribution to the event.  Afterwards there are fun things like a raffle and gifts given to everyone who volunteers.

This year, the event held a special significance for me personally as it marked the second year since the passing of Pat Huhta, a driving force behind Fishing Has No Boundaries. Her absence was felt deeply by me as I looked around at all of the familiar faces, but her legacy continues to inspire and motivate the program.

It was wonderful to see familiar faces like Vickie Borgstrom and Ted Anderson, members of Lord of Life, who have been involved in the event for many years. Their dedication and commitment to the community are truly admirable.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of Fishing Has No Boundaries. It’s a privilege to serve the community and to connect with the amazing individuals who attend this event. Pat Huhta’s invitation ten years ago changed my life, and I will forever cherish the memories I have made at Camp Confidence.
